Welcome to the family history page of Nicholas Michael Super and Susan (Mlinar) Super.

Both Nicholas Michael Super and Susan Mlinar were born in Stebnik, Austro-Hungarian empire. (Later it was in Czechoslovakia, now in Slovakia.) Stebnik is a small village in the Carpathian mountains, about 50 miles east of the Russian border and one mile south of the Polish border. Bardejov is the nearest large city. The word Stebnik means “winter quarters for bees”. A small stream called Rosucka Voda runs through the center of Stebnik.

The people from Stebnik are members of the SLAV family and are called Carpatho-Rusin (or RUSYN). People from Stebnik have lived in the Carpathian Mountains for over eleven centuries. Their occupations consisted of logging, farming, hunting, and sheepherding.

About 1,200 Rusins settled in Minneapolis around 1878. These Rusins built a “Greek Catholic” church in northeastern Minneapolis called “St. Mary’s Greek Catholic Church.”

Nicholas Michael Super died in 1909, and in 1912, at age 39, Susan Super traveled to Chicago to learn how to be a midwife. In her career as a midwife in Minneapolis, Susan Super delivered about 2500 babies and never lost a mother. This is a remarkable achievement in child delivery.
